OEM Manufacturer Fuel Statements & Warranties
 

    According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, “Manufacturers warrant their products against defects in materials and workmanship. In general, use of a particular fuel should have no effect on the materials and workmanship warranty.” This means that the use of BioDiesel should not “void the warranty,” as this is prohibited by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Manufacturers warrant their product against flaws & defects, not the fuel. Manufacturers are concerned that excessive use of BioDiesel may result in increased numbers of warranty claims for what are actually problems caused by bad fuel. Engine and vehicle manufacturers are generally comfortable with blends containing between 5% to 20% BioDiesel, but this percentage is climbing.

Many OEM engine manufacturers are acknowledging BioDiesel is ok to use by stating their opinions about using various blends in their equipment. While manufacturers do not warrant the fuel itself, many have position statements and recommendations on BioDiesel use. More manufacturers are climbing on board with BioDiesel recommendations & in fact at least one manufacturer ships out all it's vehicles with a blend of BioDiesel fuel in each vehicle as it leaves the factory!.

Here is a truncated brief synopsis of some OEM statements.

Suggestions: Consult with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and engine warranty statement before using BioDiesel. Make sure all BioDiesel used meets ASTM D6751 quality standards. Look on-line to inquire if others are using biodiesel in the same vehicle you have, ask what percentage they are using & if they have seen any problems. One strategy if you do have problems would be to retain samples of fuel for future testing if, or to take fuel samples if there are problems.
